What to Ask a Contractor Before Hiring Them

Most people will need to hire a contractor at some point in their lives. While this may be for business purposes, many people also make use of various contractors in their personal life, especially when it comes to their homes.

Since a contractor will likely cost a lot of money and be doing an important job, you need to know that you are hiring the right contractor. You need someone reliable, and you also need to understand how they work. Otherwise, it’s easy for a misunderstanding to occur.

There are a few key questions that you should ask any contractor before committing to hiring them. Keep reading to learn what they are.

What are their working hours?

Many contractors work nine-to-five hours. While this may work for some people, others may need contractors who are available after those hours, or on weekends.

It’s also a good idea to ask your contractor whether they are willing to come out for emergencies or urgent jobs, even if they are after their working hours.

Depending on your own needs and schedule, you can then select a contractor that fits. If you regularly make use of plumbing contractors, consider picking one that is open 24/7.

What are their rates?

Of course, how much a contractor will ask you for a job plays a big role in whether you will choose them or not. While we don’t recommend going with an exorbitantly priced contractor, be wary of contractors that offer their services at an unbelievably low price.

If you will be using contractors for a big job such as renovating your entire house, you may want to start saving money well in advance. You should also set up a renovation budget so that you know exactly how much you can afford to spend.

What are their references?

Remember that when you are hiring a contractor, it is a very similar relationship to one that you would have with an employee. And what do you do when you want to hire an employee?

You check their references. Contractors should be no different. You should ask your contractor for their references, and then call those references and ask them these questions. Another good idea is to look at reviews for their company online.

You can also ask to see a portfolio of their previous work. This way, you will know what kind of work you can expect from them.

What are their policies?

You should always make sure that you are aware of the contractor’s policies before you hire them. For example, what if they need to work overtime? What if the job takes longer than they promised, or they damage something? And, of course, what if you are not satisfied with their work? Can you get a refund?

Knowing all of these things upfront is certain to make your life easier and prevent any misunderstandings. If they do offer refunds and you are unhappy with their work, you can click here to learn more about getting a refund.
