7 Signs your home needs new roofing

It is said that the first impression is the best, and when it comes to your sweet home, it is the exterior that the neighbours and outsiders get to see first. We take good care of the windows and doors, the garden area, and the entrance gates, but it is the roof that often gets neglected. It is not easily reachable, and we do not get a top view of the roof to check its condition. But roofs protect your home from rain and snow. They are an essential part of the house and require regular inspection. So, here we help you in finding out if you need to replace the roof. 

1. You get sun rays from the attic

Daylight from the rooftop implies that it has cracks and holes. Though sunlight may not cause any issue, you have chances of getting raindrops, cold winds, and even ice flakes through the holes. You should look for water patches or leakage stains on the ceiling. If it changes shape during rain, it implies that the roof requires immediate attention. You could call professionals from a roofing company for checking. If the cracks are small, then patch-work would be sufficient. It also depends on the age of the roof. One cannot go for mending if the roof is very old, say more than 20 years.

2. Roof granules in your gutters

Granules on roof shingles keep UV rays off and make the roof more fire-resistant. The granule coating on asphalt roof also helps you escape extreme heat in peak summers. Thus, the granules act as a protective layer for the roof. If your roof is more than ten years old and you find particles in the gutter, then it is time for a new roof. Without granules, the shingles are likely to get damaged soon. Moreover, you also have the risk of having blocked water channels. Leaking roofs and blocked gutters could give you a bad headache on a rainy day.

The roof shingles can get curled from the corners. It is also possible that edges remain intact, and they get swollen in the middle. These indicate damages due to weathering and aging symptoms too. At times the entire slate might go missing. The roof blocks can also have cracks due to strong wings. Whether you should go for mending or replacements depends on the extent of the damage.

5. Rotting roofs

Moss and algae could grow on roof shingles. It is more common in places with moist and cold climates. The dark green patches on the roof and wall could retain moisture for a longer time and damage both the ceilings and the walls. You can wash them off by using a mixture of bleach and water in equal proportions. It is advisable not to scrap the patches with sharp tools as you might end up removing the granules too. Nowadays, we have zinc-coated shingles and other roofing materials that are algae-resistant. The durability of the roof depends on its maintenance. Good-quality roofs could significantly enhance the value of the property.

6. Damaged chimneys

Sometimes your chimneys on the rooftop might get cracks and let water seep inside the house. It would lead to stains on the ceiling and surrounding walls resulting in interior damage to the home. If the holes in the chimney are significant, then even insects could come in. At times there will be problems in the chimney flashings too. Flashings are made of galvanized steel and used to direct water away from the roof. Damaged flashing could result in the seepage of water into the wall and leads to rotting of wood. It might even lead to the collapse of the deck, wall, or both. 

7. Sagging roofs

Sagging of the roof can happen due to many reasons. When water or moisture sits on the roofing for a long time, they could warp and rot the underlying wood. It results in structural damage and ultimately causes the roof to slump. At times, Sagging happens due to overweight, as the presence of ice and snow for a long time could cause drooping. Problems with framing components like joists, rafters, and central beams can lead to sagging too.

 Roofs protect you and all your property at home. It is primarily responsible for saving you from harsh weather conditions. They also reduce your energy costs both in summer and winter. It would be best if you took care of it and regularly check for any damages. If not maintained and attended, small issues with the roof could lead to significant problems.
