Renovation Project Journal: Part 1

Welcome to the first in a series of posts that will detail my journey into a simple renovation. The project is to fix up one room in my condominium that has had some water damage due to leakage around the window. We all know how it rains here and properly sealed windows are a must. We talked about it in a previous post about water damage and it became the catalyst to get this project started. Our first step was to examine the room, we realized that we could very well just refinish all the walls (they had cracks in the paint) and ceiling and give the room a fresh look in addition to masking the repair work. After all that we would reseal the window to ensure water didn't leak again.

So that gave us 4 jobs to do:

1. Repair the damage around the window

2. Repair the cracks in the finish of the paint

3. Repaint the entire room including ceiling

4. Reseal the window

The next step is always to create a budget for the project. I set a initial budget of $500.00 for the building supplies for this DIY project. Lets see how it goes. It’s important to set your renovation budget early as in this post on starting your project. I will track the cost and report on it for future posts.

Now time for some shopping.

As always I made a list to make sure I didn’t forget any needed items, My initial list looks something like this:

  • easy fill plaster
  • sandpaper
  • sanding block
  • metal scrapers
  • plastic scraper
  • damp seal paint
  • masking tape (blue)
  • paintbrushes
  • paint rollers plus accesories
  • thinner
  • paint
  • silicone sealant

I will post a more complete list with prices paid after I actually go shopping! Lets keep our fingers crossed on that budget. Looking forward to the next post when I get everything home and begin prepping for the renovation job.

Does this seem like a lot of work? If so you can always get a contractor to do it for you!
