Advantages of Using Pervious Paving Materials

Porous pavements consist of porous material that lets water pass through them. Permeable pavements use the inbuilt or created open parts through which water can infiltrate. All the Pervious Paving Materials are proven to be highly suitable for these pavements. For instance, open-cell concrete blocks, grass concrete pavers, woodchips, shells, or gravel can be used as this sort of paving material. Precipitation can infiltrate into the ground without much difficulty. The percentage of openings varies from around 15% to 40%. This type of paving material can be used for making projects such as footpaths, playgrounds, fire service roads, and central reservations.

The Advantages

The Pervious Paving Materials offer a host of advantages to the users. These help in absorbing rainwater into the ground. It helps in the supplementation of groundwater, thereby relieving the sewage system. Also, these materials can be used for aeration around trees, as edging for paving materials, in verges, and in private gardens. Paving materials including porous clinkers, open-joint clinkers, open paving patterns, gravel, or shells can be used in the making of roads and car parking. The following are the advantages of using Pervious Paving Materials. Have a look:

1. The Porous Clinkers

It is a particular Pervious Paving Material that has the highest percentage of pores. The pores let the passage of water and air through these. The material is available in combination with a porous joint filter.

  • If the clinkers are laid on a porous foundation that is left un-joined, surfaces with porous clinkers can achieve infiltration percentages of as high as 100%.

  • These types of porous clinkers can be used for footpaths and cycle paths. The infiltration effect may be lost if the clinkers become clogged with sediment after a while.

2. Grass Concrete Pavers

Grass Concrete pavers are concrete tiles that can create large open spaces between the tiles. These types of Pervious Paving Materials are used in the pavement of Car parks, Roads, and Garage Drives. Even the material can be used in pavements that have lesser intensive uses.

  • The grass does not develop sufficiently in these kinds of intensively used parking spaces.

  • The percentage of infiltration can be traced up to 100%, depending on the type of foundation used under the tiles.

3. Open Paving Patterns

Ordinary clinkers belong to typical Pervious Paving Material that is laid in open or semi-open patterns. The accessible parts of these materials can be filled with grass, gravel, or shells. Experts with innovative senses can conceive all manner of designs.

  • Stones are also seen to come in myriad ranges of patterns. The percentage of openings in the paving can be determined by varying the pattern.

  • Determining factors acting in preventing subsidence could be traced to the quality of the foundation and the stability of the pattern. These types of savings are fragile to heavier loads.

4. Gravel, Stone Chippings and Shells

Gravel or stone chippings find their uses as Pervious Paving Material with a consistent average grain diameter. In the lesser solid foundations, subsidence will refer to the holes that are required to be filled periodically. These materials are used for footpaths and for cycle paths and car parks that are used less intensively.

  • Shells and stone chippings can be used as loose covering layers. These can even be utilized in the strewn form to become embedded in sand or clay.

  • The paving like the gravel and stone chippings requires a great deal of maintenance. Stability can be added with the use of Stabilization mats. The use of the mats helps the material in retaining its shape.

Besides of the above-mentioned, the mixtures of road metal and grass surfaces consist of a mixture of humus and road metal or gravel. The mixture is grown over stabilizing mats. The grass is disseminated over the top layer, making the mix a bit compact.
